THAMES, this day. .
Improved machinery to the Queen of Beauty paibp having been prepared,
i operations were resumed on Wednesday . evening. All the appliances were found to 1 perform their work smoothly. The pump ' is bow driving at tho rate of thirteen . strokes pet minute, with combined water , and steam power. At full speed the ma- .' chincry is capable of raising within a fraction of 34,000 gallons of water in an :; hour. During the time of the cessation the i J water in the shaft rose about 00 feet, but is . I now receding very fast. Inthc shaft three i' pairs of plungers, 12 inches in diameter and i 6 feet stroke, have been placed respectively I in cisterns at Nos 2, 4, and 7 levels, and a I draw lift is working up to the latter level. The plungers are otte on each side of the shaft, each discharging into one column, thus constituting a double acting pump i and saving about five hundred feet of 1 pipes. On the surface the old balance box with ponderous loaded box has been re- ' moved and two new balance-boxes, one on each side of the shaft, substituted. The 1 usual weights being dispensed with, and i each set of plunger* so arranged as to i balance the other. • Mr T. Quinlivan endeavoured to dispose ' of his throe racehorses—Rocket, Redeemer, I aud Garryowen—this morning, at auction, but did not find a purchaser. The reserves placed upon the animals were £200, £300, and £100 respectively.
