The Bais woe the great Challenge Stakes at New Market, Samuel second, and Innocent third. The Clearwell Stakes, for twoyear olds, were won by Balgal, |Qosyan second, Leon third. The second of uctober Nursery Stakes, for two-year-olds, were won by War-paint, Davy Jones second, Syringa third. County Inspectors of Lancashire have reported pleuro-pneumonia among swine, and the fever continues to spread.
The Board of Trade returns for the month of September show the value of imports into the United Kingdom to be £6,500,000 in excess of the same month last year, and the value of exports £2,625,000 in. excess. A fearful gale has been raging at Penzance and numerous vessels have parted their cables and been damaged, 'i he harbour works and quays are also damaged, and several small yachts and boats have been destroyed. A fishing lugger was capsized at the entrance to the harbour and five persons drowned. The "Standard " says that in consequence of tne unsettled slate of affairs in Lima, and the need of additional protection to British interests, orders have been dispatched by telegraph to the Commander-in-Chief of the British fleet in the Pacific, to defer his visit to Tahiti and proceed immediately to Callao.
The London " Morning Post" announces that the ex-Empress Eugenic has just bought the Farnborough estate, in Hampshire, cloße to the borders of the County of Surrey, for £50,000. Her Majesty intends to build on the property a memorial chapel to receivo the bodies of the Emperor arid Prince Imperial.
