The Diocesan Synod.
'The Synod met at 5 o'clock yesterday afterinooh'ahd Was well attended, the Bishop presiding. A proposal wns made by Dr Goldsbro' to collect contributions from the 'members towards the expense of tho Synod, but tlie president declined to sanction such ja proceeding until it has been authorised by jtho Synod. The Roy W. Lambert waa ;ndtnitted to a seat in tho Synod.—Progress 'was made in committee ou the proposed .amendments to " Statutes Nos'2, 4, 5, and •7."—Gonaidorablo -discussion took place ou 'an amendment proposed by Rev [Mr Tebbs to insert , after clause 12 " To provide for tho proper conduct of Divine [service in chapels ot ease (or mission churches) without districts attached, -within .duly constituted parishes, two sidesmen shall !be appointed kt the time of tho election of {churchwardens; one to be nominated by the [incumbent of the parish, and the other to be elected by the congregation of the chapel in question ; and that such sidesmen shall act ;as deputies for and bo responsible to the churchwardens of the parish for the due discharge of their duties."— jThis was ultimately withdrawn.—A motion by Mr Upton to provide funds for Sunday schools was negatived on a division. Mr j Upton also moved a new clause to place tho management 'of Sunday schools aud apipointment of teachers under the control of ministers ot parishes, which was adopted.— Key Mr Tebbs moved an amendment in ■clause -28 requiring all persons holding-lay offices in a pariah to be communicants. —This proposal was sharply criticised by Mr Hughos, Who thought the mover should 'have become a little more colonised before proposing it.—Mr Tebbs deprecated this personal reflection, and declared that he jwas merely actuated by a sense of duty.— iThe motion was lost. —Mr Nelson moved an 'amendment providing that in the event of any disagreement between' the minister iand vestry an appeal should be made to the Standing Committee. Ho instanced the case in which he nnd hia. vestry had disagreed as to the dismissal of an officer of the Church, who ho considered had disgrace! himself and the Church. Mr Hughes denied that any complaint bad been proved beforo the vestry, and Archdeacon Maunsell deprecated tho introduction of local matters. The clauso was agreed to, and notices of motion having been given, the Synod adjourned.
