LOCAL FESTIVITIES.
There were about 400 at the Speight recaption soiree last night. It was a great success.
Mr Shccan's speech on the Thames railway is published in this morniug's Advertiser as some compensation for his absence from the meeting. Sir George Grey also apologised lor his absence, on the ground of the fatigues ot the session.
A complimentary ball was also given last night to the Mayor, by those who had partaken of his hospitality on many occasions. It was a great success. There is no mining news. RUSSELL, this day. ■ IHE GOVEHNOR AT RUSSELL. Sir Hercules Robinson and party landed at BusscJl, and visited the scenes of tho first Maori war. Tho ltotomnhana sails at G o'clock to-night.
