LICENSING COURT, KIRIKIRIROA.

Waikato Hotel.—An application was made for a license by Mir Win.. Buck for tho abo.ve hotol, in Hamilton, Kast, erected by Mr P,. LeQuesnc. }n reply to a question by the Court, Sergeant; McQovorn stated that all the rooms were not furnished.—Mr O'Ncil a.ppoared for the applicant, Bnd said the houso would bo completely furnished as soon as the lease was signed,, and that two fire-escapes had been fixed.—The Chairman said that the Commissioners having determined to grant the license, it would be issued, but not until the house was furnished. When that was done, Messrs Graham ami Runcimau would <*o over the premises to see that the Act had been complied with ; ho himself would have' his say at the present time. The nutter of granting the license or »ot, he had jeft to bis brother Commissioners. Had it been loft to himself, he would not havo granted it. Mr Le Quesne had applied for a license when the hotel was built more than a year ago, and could have had it, but the house had been keut closed up to the present time. Jf a aecoSa hotel was required, Mr J,e Quesne by his acdon, Uad prevented any enterprising person from OU'iamg a house for tt.Q,t purpose, and the public had had to suffer in consequence, and bad been unjustly dealt with. If it was not required, the license ought not to be granted. Houses were not licensed for the convenience of the owner, but for the pubhe, • and_if men like Mr Le Quesne could keep a house closed for 12 months for his own convenience, why shouldVot one publican, where there \ye!fe two, buy the other out and cW the bouse, thus ena'tin" a iimoj^y.
