CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held this afternoon. There were present: His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Fleming, Aickin, Offer, Buchanan, Thompson, Nathan, Crowther, andWald.l!,

Sewage.—Messrs J. Griffiths and Co., bakers and confectioners, wrote requesting the immediate adoption of some measures for the outlet of sewage from their premises on the wharf.

Alteration of Cellar.—A letter was received from Mr D. Nathan, stating that any proposed alterations to his cellar for the purpose ot improving the footway should be made at the expense of the Council, as he had obtained the permanent levels before constructing it. Water.—Mr J. Batger repuested that water might be laid on to the premises of himself and Mr Compton, situated at the reclamation.—Referred to Works Committee.

Union-street. -Mr J. Buchanan applied for information as to the permanent levels of Union-street, for he believed that spine buildings at present in Course of erection had encroached upon the footpath.— Kef erred to Works Committee. ; \

Right-of-way.—Mr T. A. Watt, of Hepburn-street, prayed that the Council would' order its men to lay off a right-of-way to his house. It was agreed to provide the applicant with the means ot access to his house.

Proposed new Edifice.—A letter was received_ from Mr George Graham announcing his intention to erect a building at the corner of Custom-house and Hobson streets, and requesting the Council to causo the bank of earth on the northern-end of the retaining wall to be removed; besides fixing the levels of Moore-street.—Referred to Works Committee.

Extension of Water Supply.—Councillor Buchanan presented a petition praying tor tho extension of a city water main down Custom-house-street West, from Albert-street to Nelson-street.—Referred to Works Committee.

The Unemployed.—A petition (already published) was received by a number of unemployed labourers praying for temporary relief. Tho Mayor a.iid that he had communicated with tfce Government on the matter. Councillor Crowther then suggested that His Worship should obtain railway passes for the men, so: that if they were aole to procure work in the Waikato they might be enabled to journey thither free, as had been done in the South. Tho Mayor promised to inquire into this matter, and tne petition was then received. ,

The Market.— A memorial was received from the stall 'holders in the City Market, praying that tho building might he kept open till 7 p.m. each week evening during the summer months. The request was granted for the present. Tencers.—The.tender of A. Woolby and P. Brewin, £403, was accepted for works in Chapel-street. That of A. McGuirq, £153, for works in Anglesea-dtreet. These" contracts have been given out in orderf that some relief may be afforded the unemployed.

' WORKS COMMITTEE'S REPORT.

The report of this Committee contained the fallowing recommendations :■—(1) That a copy of the Surveyor's report be forwarded to the Graf ton Road petitioners, and that they!be informed that at present the Council has no funds at its disposal with which to carry out the works as suggested, but that it is willing to do the work in its turn as soon as funds are available. (2) That1 Mr Coleman be informed that the work in Waterloo Quadrant of which he complained was necessary and unavoidable. (3) That the Surveyor arrange with the petitioners of Drako and Giabam-streots for tlifi beat site for a lamp. (4). That a lamp; be erected at the corner of Kokeby and jUpper Queen-streets. (5). That a water main be laid down Dock-street. (6). That a copy of the surveyor's report be forwarded to the Domain and WyuyardBtreets' petitioners. (7). That the present dust pontract be continued, the contractor Bnding the depot. (8). That Mr Nathan do the required work iv Waterloo Quadrant at his own expense. (9). That the street enclosures |in various parts of the city be shut xip for the present. (10). That the Council endeavour to bring tho provisions of the Public Health Act into operation in Wellington Lane. (11). That a sub-com-mittee be appointed to tully consider tho Sanitary Inspector's report on drainage, and also the whole question upon some uniform system. FINANCE COMMITTEE. This Committee recommended that the construction of the baths should be undertaken in August next; that W. Kirkland's request be not granted; and that tho charge of which George Baldock complains is fair and reasonable. I PARK COMMITTEE. The Park Committee recommended th at in addition to tho broad path at the entrance from Ponsonby Road, a footpath four feet in width should be constructed between the trees skirting the Park, the estimated cost being about £25.
