NARROW ESCAPE OF PASSENGERS.
FURTHER PARTICULARS.
Last evening a Maori arrived here from W him gape and reported the total wreck of the steamer Geelong at that place. It seems by his account that the steamer took the bar at low water, nnd crossed the outer bar safely, but as there was not suilicieut water she struck on a spit inside the bar and broke up almost at once. The crew had a narrow escape. The engineer, who is all elderly man, lashed himself to a piece of floating board, and aftor a long swim reached the shore in safety. Two ladies, who wore passengers—Mrs McMatu and Mrs Smith"—got hold of a cask and drifted about 4 miles before they reached tlie shore. All the others came ashore on pieces of the wreclc. with the exception of a Maori man and woman, who were drowned trying to get ashore.
