RIOT AT OAMARU.
The weather was splendid over the holidays. . The principal gathering was at the Caledonian Sports, when 8,000 were present. The Caledonian Handicap of 220 «md 400 yards was won by Scott, who ran first in each heat. K. Allen proved the best wrestler in border style. Bourke won the mile race easily, starting from the scratch in splendid time, 4 miv. 3-Jsecs. Claxtpn, with 25secs. handicap, won the .three miles walking race in 25min. 32secs. Nearly 500 peisons went to Oamaru in the Hawea yesterday. A rowdy mob took possession of the streets on New Year's Day' smashing tlie windows and dragging the gates off houses, flooring pedestrians, and even assaulting the police. Two of the number were arrested and remanded, in order that they may be charged under the : Riot Act. In Cameron's £2.000 Sweep (Champion Race), Alexander Gmham, of Hawke's Bay, -drtw Wellington ; Barnett, of Timarii, Warlock ; Donnelly Bryant, of the Railway Hotel at Winslow, Bosworth.
