NAPIER, this day. Charles Stewart, late landlord: of the Pacific Hotel, Havelock, was committed for trial yesterday, oti a charge of obtaining a registered letter, containing- jewellery, etc., value of about £50. It was brought out in the evidence that .there: were-two Charles Stuarts residing in the district,1 one signing himself Stewart and. the other Stuart; one was a publican, and the;other a sheep farmer. The former*wasvgrnafcHhe letter by the postal authorities; appropriated it, and gave the jewellery to certaifffe'fiiale friends, stating it was sent out to/Mm; by his brother; whereas the'jeweUeryffwas really given by Mr Stuart to a female friend when on a visit to. Engraitd^ recently, but owing to the friendship having been broken up, the lady had:returned it to him by sending it- through;the post to New' Zealand. The affair; was.'found out in this manner:—A barmaid, who Mw the real Simon Pure, mentioned that she/had in her ppssession a gold locket in which^as a photograph which resembled him.-- 'He expressed a desire to see it, and on its being shown to him, was staggered to see1 the locket and likeness he had presented,to his female friend in England, and which he expected to receive from home, r The were put on the track of " Stewart," jvno was arrested, and in his possession Jwas found the letter from the lady; and the police were afterwards successful in tracing what had become of the jewellery,,.. The Bench declined to grant the culprit bail-
