Fire at Remuera.

THE lire-bells rang on Saturday night with astonishing vigour, and by the iiame reflected in the eastern sky, it was evident that the fiery element had visited Remuera. The scene proved to be the stabling, co wsheds, and piggeries of Mr Reubeu Scarboro', who lives a little below the residence of Mr Thomas Morrin. The fire was caused by children going into the stable among the hay and straw with a naked candle about seven o'clock in the evening The candle set fire to some combustible material, and the fire spread rapidly over the whole building. Fortunately, however, all the horses and cattle were got out without injury. The neighbours were quickly on the spot, and worked hard to prevent the spread of the fire to the dwelling-house close by. This was a difficult task, as the supply of water was obtainable only from a well in the paddock, some distance away. Twice the flames were subdued, but eventually they not only obtained mastery over all the shedding, but ran along a fence connecting with the house. The pulling down of this was the next teat accomplished, and the house saved thereby. The wind, fortunately, blew in the opposite direction, and all danger was over in about half-an-hour. Much sympathy was expressed tor Mr Scarboro's he having been very unfortunate in a Variety of ways during the last year or so. On Saturday night, thanks to the assistance rendered, the loss was not so great as it otherwise would have been. No live stock was lost. The little sucking pigs, which could not walk out ot their stye, were carried away in sacks. Several members of the local Highway Board, including the Chairman thereof, proceeded to the scene of the fire. Among those present .vere Messrs Morrow, Butcher, Larkins, Carr, Joseph L. Wilson, Isaacs, and Griffin. Mr Scarboro' is much obliged to them for their kind interest and assistance. Sergeant Mulville aud Constable Collis, of Parnell, were promptly at thefire. SergeantMajor Mason displayed his customary zeal for tbe service by marching out, accompanied by Detective Jeffrey and a posse of constables. They, however, found themselves i a a quiet and respectable community, and with the exception of the squeaking of a few sacksfulls of little sucking pigs there was no noise or disturbance. After a brief contemplation of the scene they all marched back to duty or to home.
