ANOTHER BIG JOB AT RATEPAYERS COST.
(To the Editor of the Star.) Sir,—l hear that pressure is about to be put on the City Council for the purpo?e of causing them •to make a great cutting in Upper Queen-street. I thinklthat it is about timethat you should call the attention; of the people to the way these things are managed. Outsiders learn for the first time that a great and expensive work is in progress, by seeing the heaps of clay and sloughs of mud over or through which they have to force their way. And all this perhaps (as in the case of Hobson-street); to secure the removal of a lump, or a slight of no benefit whatever to the townspeople at large. They say that certain property owners in Upper Queen-street are new urging the Council to undertake great works at a cost of some £15,000 I am told, with the object of bringing back the traffic which has been diverted by the superior gradients of Wellesley-street East. Now, thisjis a matter of no public concern whatever. Wellesley-street quite suffices for the want of commerce, and what does it matter to the ratepayers whether that street is used or Upper Queen-street ? If you agree with me about this, you will, I. aoubt not use your powerful influence in preventing a step being taken, which will cause another largo waste of our money, and willideserve the name of aiob.—lam, &c, A Ratepayer,
