THE NEWMARKET RAILWAY CROSSING.

THE inhabitants of Remuera and Newmarket held a public meeting last evening in Newmarket, to consider the question of a, bridge over the railway crossing, which is deemed unsafe in its present open condition. Mr Clayton, Chairman of the District Highway Board, occupied the chair. The Chairman introduced the business, and recounted some of the accidents and narrow escapes of others at the crossing, which should be prevented by a bridge. He urged moreover, the removal of the railway workshops to Newmarket which would be a great advantage to the workmen in several ways, and, at the same time, give a clear view of the trains. Mr F. Larkins then moved "That Mr Tole be requested to continue urging on the Government theabsolute necessity for the immediate erection of a bridge over the dangerous, crossing on the Remuera road, near Newmarket station." The mover pointed out the danger to which persons were exposed at this crossing, as Mr Barstojv had frequently shewn. Mr Larkins strongly urged the necessity for immediate steps'being taken for the erection of the proposed bridge. Mr Tonks seconded the resolution, and Mr Jenkins supported it. Mr James Baber moved as an amendment " That the word * bridge' be left out of the resolution, and that the Government should rectify their own engineering blunders." MrMcCanl seconded Mr Baber's amendment pro forma, but was in favour of the original resolution which was carried almost unanimously, Mr Jenkins then moved, and Mr Movgin seconded, " That the member for Eden be requested to urge on the Government that the railway workshops should be removed to Newmarket, where there was a large area of suitable land available." Mr Scarborough objected to the Jposition of the site for the workshops being entertained by that meeting. Mr McCaul agreed with Mr Scarborough. _ It was, after some further discussion, determined to urge upon the Minister of Public "Works the advisability of having the railway workshops removed to Newmarket, and that Messrs Tole and Moss be requested to support the petition. Mr Nolan then moved, and Mr Tonks seconded, remarking that it simply meant removing the rrcecourseplatform to a more convenient position, •' That Mr Tole be requested to urge on the Government the speedy erection of a station at.Green Lane, authorised by the late Government." The motion was put and carried) and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.

The inspection parades of the Scottish, Victoria and Hobson companies of volunteers took place last evening in the presence of Major Withers. The members were subsequently put through by Major Derrom, who exercised them in battalion drill.

At a meeting of the Arch Hill ratepayers, held last night to consider the advisability ofj strking a rule for lighting the district with gas, it was resolved, " That this meeting empower the Board to incur the expense

necessary for lighting the district with gas." Captain Fraser, R.M., and Mr Superintendent Thomson have been appointed a commission to inquire into some charges, brought by a female prisoner, in Shortland lock-up, against some members of the local police force. , . Sir Thomas Tancred, of Canterbury, has purchased the Mangaharnru property at Napier from Messrs. Gemmell and Co.; for £18,500. -
