THEATRE ROYAL.

"OUR BOARDING HOUSE."

The comedy of "Our Boarding House" was played for the first time in Auckland at the Theatre Royal last night, aud proved a great success. It id a piece likely to suit the requirements of nearly all theatre-goers for the plot is interesting, comprehensible, and probable ; and the dialogue if not exactly sparkling, is yet to the point. The scene is laid in a Chicago boarding house, aud the interest centres in the troubles and perplexities of a lovely widow named Beatrice Mameheim, who is loved by three of the boarders in the house, and persecuted by the fourth—a scoundrelly Italian who knows painful secrets of her past life. This character was of course pourtrayed by Miss Firmin, whose versatile powers are really astonishing. Mr Jack carried off the principal honours of the evening. His Professor Gregarious Gillypot was an exquisitely humorous piece of acting, and kept the audience in roars ot laughter.

The other parts were all well played, but j Mr Steele, Mrs Hill, Mr Musgrave, and | Mrßurford, aredeservingofspecialmention. j The crush of mail news prevents us review- i ing the piece at any great length, but we j can conscientiously promise all who visit the theatre to-night a pleasant evening, it is undoubtedly one of the best and most characteristic American pieces ever placed upon the colonial stage, affording an insight into thatboardin;; house system which is one of the most interesting aud novel phases of life in the United states.
