POLICE COURT.-THIS DAY.

(Before J. Cosgrave and A. Clements. Esqs., Justices). DRUNK.

Five drunkards were dealt with in the usual way. LARCENY. Alice Sarah Lamb, charged with stealing a blanket, value 10s, the property of Wm. Lamb, pleaded not guilty. John Lamb said the prisoner was his daughter. She came to his house, and asked permission to stay there a day or two, which was granted. Afterwards she took the liberty of taking a blanket, and carrying it off over her shoulders. His wife saw tho girl go away. The case was dismissed, ATTEMPTED MURDER. Alex. Campbell was charged with attempted murder, at the Block-hous» Bay, near Whau. Mr Pardy said the prisoner was arrested last night by Detcer.ivo Jeffrey. He was charged by a man named Smith with attempting to poison him, by putting arsenic in his tea. Remanded to the 14th in3tLARCENY.

James Watson was charged with stealing £1 Is 4d. Mr Sub-Inspector Pardy asked that tho case might bo remanded, as no witnesses were present. Remanded till to-morrow.

BRRACH OF TIIE PEACE. Wm, McGinley was charged with behaving in a public place, to wit, Union-street, in a manner calculated to provoke a breach of the peace. No appearance. Sub-Inspector Pardy said the case was a serious one; prisoner came to Daffey's house late at night broke open the door, and thrashed Mr Daffey and his brother soundly. Warrant issued. ANOTHER ASSAULT. Wm. McGinley wa3 charged with assaulting Henry Daffey, and also with wilfully and maliciously damaging a door to the extent of 10s, the said door being H. Daffey's property. No appearance. Warrant issued. ASSAULT. Frank and Charles Hayward, two small boys, were summoned' for assaulting Thos. Ash at Mount Eden. This was a Quarrel between some boys, ihe Bench mediated, and the case was withdrawn.

WIFE BE-TING. Wm. Burtenshaw was charged with assaulting his wife, Mary Ann Burtenshaw. Ann Burthenshaw said her husband had assaulted her in several ways, but she did not wish to press the case. Sub-Inspector Pardy said Mrs Burtenshaw was in the habit of drinking, and no doubt provoked her husband greatly at times. He was a hardworking man, and if she would keep sober, all would be right. The case was withdrawn with the permission of the Bench.
