MAINTENANCE OF THE GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
I*r accordance with a circular issued by the Hon. Col. Whitmore, Colonial Secretary, the following representatives of Highway Boards in the County of Eden interviewed that gentleman this morning, with reference to the maintenance of the Great South Road :—Mr J. Morrison, Chairman Arch Hill Highway Board; Mr J. L. Wilson, Chairman Remuera Highway Board; Mr T. Thomson, Chairman Mount Eden Highway Board; Mr W. J. Suiter, Chairman, and Mr C. A. Atkin, Secretary, of the Eden Terrace Highway Board; Mr J. Warren, Chairman of the Karangahape Highway Board; Mr A. Ashton, Secretary Grafton Road Highway Board; and Mr Barton Ireland, Eden County Council The matter having been introduced, a long conversation took place. Col. Whitmore finally agreed to spend the money at present in hand from tolls in the repair of the Great South Road. Mr Barton Ireland desired to have the Great North Road included, but this Col. Whitmore declined to do, on the ground th.ii fc. the Government had nothing to do with it. . t MOUNT EDEN POND. The Chairmen of the|Boards interested in this matter introduced the question of the drainage Colonel Whitmore requested the Boards interested to meet and discuss the matter, and decide on as much as possible, after which he would be happy to meet a deputation from the Boards. Mr Suiter read a letter from Mr Ewington on the danger to the health of his family. FORMS FOE RETURN. Mr Warren informed Colonel Whitmore that the Highway Districts had not yet been supplied from Wellington with the forms for receipts and expenditure up to the 31st March. g|The hon. gentleman promised to see to the m&tter, and the deputation withdrew.' - Owing,to the over-officiousness of one of the clerks in the^office, named Mr Stevens, our reporter was prevented from being present until the interview was half over, though" the Native Minister had -distinctly assured one of the reporters when the deputation was about to go iv that the interview was open to the Press. _ .
