MUSEUM AND INSTITUTE.
Mr. Severn's lecture last night was well attended, the great hall of the Institute being nearly Ml at eight o'clock. The subject was the "Sun," and the lecturen remarks were very interesting, and eagerlylistened to. We cannot help thinking it would be an improvement if the lectures were delivered in the large room over the entrance. As it is, a great porportion of the lecturer's remarks are lost in the noise made by the people passing to and fro in the gallery. Among the exhibits have not yet rec ived their medted recognition at our hands, are somo very valuable and beautiful article! contributed by the Roman Catho'ic p.iesthorjd and conventual institutions of Auckland. Among these may be mentioned pictures of "The Virgin and Child" and "Sc Theresa" exhibited by the S'stera of Mercy. These are ye: y creditably executed. We notice also a fine painting of the " General Council of the Vatican 1871," shown by Father Walter McDonald, and also an artistic sketch of the "Virgin and Child." The same gentleman shows a picture of K;1 trenny Castle drawn by a pupil of St Mary's boarding and select school. This shows good promise. We have r'so at ?aut'ful stone cro~s made from a piece of Mangapai stone. There is a portrait of St. Frricis of Ardysium cut on a pearl shell and a medallion of Pope Pius the IX.
