POLICE COURT.—This Day.

(Before R. G. Barstow, Esq., R.M.) DRTTNK.ENNESS. . : '

Annie O'Rielly was fined 5s and costs,, for being drunk ; James Veruon forfeited hia bail; ard Nancy Nobbs, for the same offence, was sent to gaol for seven days.

INCORRIGIBLE. William McElvie, a notorious thief, was charged with stealing a coat, value 20s, the property of a person unknown. Prisoner said the coat was his own property ; it was late on Saturday evening when he left Mount Eddn gaol, and so he folded up his coat and other articles intending to turn his back upon Auckland for ever ; but to his surprise, when about to start Detective Grace tapped him'on hia shoulder and accosted him as an old friend, and instead of taking him into a public-house for a nobbier, took him to the station and wanted to know where he got his macintosh from ; and more, he proceeded to search his pockets. He considered it* a great piece of impertinence on the part of Detective Grace, but detectives take just what liberties they like with gentlemen, He Bhould be able to prove that the coat was his own property, and nob the property of another. i ;., v . ,j Sub-Inspector Pardy asked for a remand, as he had no doubt but the real owner, of the coat could be found in a few days.

His Worship acceded, and prisoner was remander? until Saturday. Prisoner left the dock murmuring at the wane of percaption on tha' part of Justioe, who was evidently too blind to distinguish an honest mm from a despicable thief.

This was all the business.
