CITY COUNCIL.—This Day.
The usual fortnighly meeting of the City Council was held this afternoon. Present: his Worship the Mayor in the chair ; Councillors Isaacs, Brett, Buchnan, Daldy, Hurst, and Holdship. LETTERS. A letter was read from Mrs. Catherine Fitzpatrick, asking for relief, as her husband, who had been employed during the last six years, had left her and her child destitute. On the motion of Councillor Brett, seconded by Councillor Isaacs the matter was left over for enquiry before recommending the matter to the .Finance commitee. CITY ENDOWMENTS AND CORPORATION ACTS. His Worship informed the Council that the City Endowment and City Corporation Acts had been passed. Rev. Vvilliam Taylor, of the College, claimed exemption from rates on tbe ground of his school being a public institution. It was stated that the property was only rated at one half the value. It was moved, seconded, and carried— " That the application of E,ev. Mr Taylor cannot be enter Gained." A letter was read from Mr. Linabury, draper, requesting permission to erect a signboard. Moved by Councillor Holdahip, seconded by Councillor Isaacs, " That Mr. Linabury's request be granted subject to certain conditions." A letter was read from Mr William Robinson, of lake Takapona, desiring to surrender the lease of an allotment, for which he pays an annual rent of £12 10a. Received. A letter was read from Mr. Adam Brock, requesting the I ouncil to erect two lamps in certain spots near St. James' Presbyterian Church as per letter. His Worship remarked that St. Matthew's people erected their own lamp, and he thought it was desirable for the St. James' people to follow the example. The letter was not entertained. Councillor Cosgrave's motion was carried. An application was read from Mr Seccombe, asking the loan or to purchase certain cannon. JSTot received. A letter was read from Mr Greenwood offering the use of the market yard to the Council for test purposes hi connection with the waterworks. Councillor Cosgrave moved '-' That the letter be received and referred to the Market Committee to report »pon." Councillor Hurst seconded. Councillor Buchanan moved, and Councillor Daldy seconded, as an amendment — " That the letter be not received." A letter was recived from the inhabitants of Hepburn-street requesting the erection of two lamps in the neighbourhood of Hepburn and Beresford-streets. Referred to the lighting committee. STREET AUCTIONEER. Councillor Cosgrave asked if the attention of the Council had been called to the V cheap Jack," who was engaged every night selling goods in the old market reserve. The Town Clerk replied that the matter was now under consideration.
