CEMETERY DRAINAGE.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sir, —In your issue of Friday there is a letter from "W.8." which is calculated to mislead the public, and, knowing so, I feel it my duty to contradict it, not as regards Mr Belcher's bone mill, which " W.8." complains of—but there he should leave off, and not try to make his fellow-citizens believe that the drainage of the Roman Catholic Cemetery runs into our reservoir, and that, when the water comes into the town from from our new works, they will be drinking particles or essences of some departed fiiend or distant relation lying in the said Roman Catholic Cemetery ; for, if Mr Belcher's drainage would empty itself there, the graveyard drainage does so also —so says " W.B" Now if Mr W.B. must be labouring under some delusion, or he is speaking from hearsay, or I am sure he would not say what he does, but if Mr W.B. will take the trouble of walking the course down from the threemile post by the bridge he will find out his error. The gulley he mentions empties itself undoubtedly into Motion's creek, but at a considerable distance lower down than the Springs, which are a different source altogether, and on a much higher level : therefore, no fear of drainage. Ihere is no doubt that it •will be troublesome enough to pay for the water when it comes, but for the public to pay and to fancy it had a grave-yard taint would be a cruel piece of business, and a stigma on one of the most beautiful springs in New Zealand. , Any person doubting this statement should see for himself. It is a nice healthy walk, easy distance, and would give an appetite for [breakfast. —V. Blagrove.
