THE PAKURANGA HUNT.
"Bttkwood," Mr. and Mrs. T. Morrin'n beautiful seat at Remuera, wa*, on Saturday, the scene of a very gay rdimion, on the occasion of the meet of the Pakuranga hounds. Open house was the order of the day. Mrs. Morrin dispensing the hospitalities of the mansion right royally. Among the guests at the luncheon were most of the leading aristocracy of Auckland. The number could not have been less than 200; while of the general public assembled to see the fun there were more than double that number. The words of the old song,
"A southerly wind and a cloudy sky, Proclaim a hunting morning." May not perhaps be applicable to New Zealand hunting, but the southerly breeze was there, although the sky was beautifully clear. The hounds threw off in a pad dock close to Ellerslie Heuse, where Leonard started tbe drag on foot in the direction of St. John's College. Twenty minutes law was allowed and then the field went off in pursuit, and the line of country being well chosen, an excellent run to the College walls ensued. Here a halt was called and a second drag was laid back over a different route. Another good rally followed, the jumping this being varied by some awkward contretemps which howevei were not serious enough to mar the pleasure of the day. The mo^t serious accident was that which occurred to Mr Calvert, the wellknown "Vet." who was riding Mr. McCosh Clark's aged horse Doctor, lately purchased from Mr. T. Morrin, and entered for the Handicap Burble Race at the Club's approaching meeting. The rider and horse came to grief in a ditch which had not been observed on the far side of a wall. The rider was only Bhaken, but the.horsebroke its back and had to be destroyed to put it out of its misery.
