The prisoner appeared in a wretched condition—literally filthy. He pleaded guilty, and was fined 10s and costs. Robert Chalmers was brought up on warrant, charged with violently assaulting Grace Wells Chalmers, on the 23rd instant. Mr Rees appeared for complainant, and Mr Laishley for the accused. Mr Laishley stated that as he had only just received instructions to appear for the defendant, he was not prepared with the defence ; he would ask therefore, in compliance with the wish of Chalmers, that the case might be remanded until next week. Mr. Rees objected to the adjournment. The case was adjourned until half-past eleven, and again until a quarter to twelve. Mr Laishley again asked for a remand until Tuesday next, and, as Mr Rees withdrew his objection, the request was granted. The Bench ordered the defendant to find bail : himself in £50, and two sureties of £25 each. This was all the business.
