LATEST SOUTHERN TELEGRAMS.
NAPIER
[From our own Correspondent.) This day.
Mailman Missing. William G. Akman, Wairoa mailman, is missing. It is feared he is drowned. The mail was due in Napier on Monday morning. Search has been made, and it was found he had crossed the Mohaka river, but there was no trace of him between there and Petane. Three mailmen have been drowned on this route. Provincial Elections. The Provincial elections are exciting the whole of public attention. There is likely to be a strong contest next session between town and country. The Napier town reserves were alienated by the last Council for educational purposes, and the question of reserving them is the test in this election ; meantime the Borough is without revenue. Mr Colenso, of Lexicon notoriety, offers himself for two town electorates, and is opposed in both.
The Corporation, having no proper offices, have been using a room in the^ Provincial Government buildings. They have now received notice to quit from the Superintendent.
Mr Sheehan. Mr Sheehan, Provincial Secretary, will leave for Auckland next week.
