CRICKET. This Day.

AUCKLAND ROWING CLUB C. C. V. NORTH teoris.

This match—a standing dish in the cricketing programme of the season —is being played at the North Shore as we go to press. Those of us who at school waded through Xin fe ' Edward the Vl,'s Latin Grammar, will recollect the man who from a rower became an orator. Granted the possibility of suuh a metamorphosis there is little difficulty in imagining a rower taking to cricket. That our oarsmen have taken to it as kindly as they might may be questioned ; but, considering all things, they have quite as much reason to be satisfied with their performances on the green sward as they have to be content with their success on the green water. Soon after one o'clock the Sowing Club team met at the boat-house, and, being divided into three crews by Mr T. Henderson, junr., the captain started for the scene of the contest in true oarsmen style. On landing, the boats were hauled up on the beach, and, donning their jackets, the men trudged it on to the field, where their opponents awaited them. A large number oE ladies and gentlemen, consisting both of residents in the iocality and visitors from town, witnessed the game. The two teams were not so badly matched, although the "pullers" were very deficient, in "trundlers."
