CITY COUNCIL.—This Day.
The usual monthly meeting of the City Council was held this afternoon. Present : His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Messrs Prime, Hurst, Buchanan, Daldy, and Cosgrave. LETTERS. A letter was read from Mr Holdship, who regretted that be was obliged to be absent from tbe Council on account of business. A letter was read from Messrs Masefield and Co., requesting to be allowed to raise their boiler-shop 40 feet higher, on account of increased business.
Mr Anderson reported that the required alteration would not effect the neighbouring buildings. The request was granted. A letter was read from Mr Parsons of the Gas Company, respecting the erection of twenty-five lamps in different parts of the city, at £8 per lamp per annum. The Mayor said there was evidently an attempt to hurry this matter, and he thought the matter should be duly considered.
It was at length agreed, upon the motion of Councillor Daldy, seconded by Councillor Cosgrave—" That the matter be referred to the lighting committee for settlemedt." A letter was read from Mr John Bollard, informing tbe Council that be bad accepted a contract from Mr Faulder for night-soil, to be deposited on tbe farm at the Whau. After a long and warm discussion, Councillor Cosgrave moved, and Councillor Prime seconded, " That the letter of Mr Bollard be referred to the Nuisance Committee, to deal with tbe whole matter with power to act. — Carried.
A letter was read from Mr James Coupland, requesting permission to erect a brick wall and iron gate on bis premises. It was agreed that the matter be left in the bands of the City Surveyor, witli power to act.
