"GAZETTE" EXTRAORDINARY.

THE STJPERINTF.NDFNT'3 VI9IT TO

EUROPE,

Shortly before going to press we have to hand a Provincial Government Gazette Extraordinary published this day. We greatly regret that the hour precludes our giving a full digest of its contents. These are in facr the correspondence, telegraphic and otherwise which passed between the uperintendent and the General Government withjreference to the recently contemplated visit of His Honor to Great Britain with the object of appointing local agents for emigration and special settle" ment. The first telegram is with reference to permission for the duties of Mr Tole as Crown Lands Commissioner being performed by deputy, to which the Secretary of Crown Lands replies evasively, but in a manner evidently accepted as a refusal. The third telegram, dated 12th November, from the Superintendent, states the intention of bis Honor to proceed to Great Britain, and asks for the delegated powers to be given to Mr Dignan. No. 4 telegram of 14th November is from Dr Pollen, declining, and stating that " The Government cannot recoguise any necessity for your proceeding to Great Britain for the purpose of promoting immigration and the formation of Special Settlement Associations." Telegram No. sof tthe 17th November acknowledges receipt, and then follows a very lengthy and a very able letter from the Superintendent, of date 21sb November. In thip, Mr. Williamson, while expressing his intention of abandoning the project for the present, defends the wisdom and necessity for special settlements, showing that with such objects the Provincial Council had passed resolutions, and the Waste Lands Act had been passed. Eefers to the character of the immigration heretofore, the small amount of actual settlement, and the total departure in this from the original intention of the framers of the Public Works and Immigration scheme; quotes the 57th clause of the Act as specially framed for the Superintendent to appoint duly qualified persona to act as agents on behalf of the province in promoting such immigration, and in the formatiou of Special Settlement Associations." The Superintendent also refers to Mr Vogel'a being cognizant of the intention, and asserts that he knew he " would have received the benefit of Mr Vogel's cordial assistance while at home." We regret that we have time for only this hurried glance at the correspondence, to which we shall refer at greater length again.
