ACCIDENT TO THE S.S. HERO

The Hero (a.), which arrived yesterday from Auckland, via Sydney, had a precarious time of ifc on her voyage from the latter port in consequence of her rudder head carrying away. The accident occurred about eight o'clock on Monday last, about twenty miles on this side of Cape Everard, during a heavy gale from S. W., accompanied by a heavy sea. The fracture had evidently been of long standing, but had been concealed by the casing. For twenty-four hours after the occurrence the steamer had to be steered by her canvas until the gale moderated. The rudder shaft had to be got at in the 'tween decks, and a hole drilled in it for the insertion of a stout iron bar or key. This, however carried away with the violence of the weather, and a 10 foot plank was then fixed to the rudder shaft with clumps and fastenings, and it took five men to work this primitive steering apparatus, the weather all the time being very rough.— Argus, Nov. 12.
