IMPORTANT TO SAN FRANCISCO MAIL STEAMER CAPTAINS.

Capt. Brown of the s.s. City of Melbourne in the report of hi 3 late passage from San Francisco says :—" I must here remark that upon my former and present voyage. I have found a strong set to the eastward between the latitude of 5' and 10' N. ; so much as 39 miles? in 24 hours, therefore great care should be taken in the vicinity of Polynesian Island and the adjacent reefs."

The whaler Oamanli of New Bedford last from Bay of Islands wa3 spoken by the barque Fanny Fisher (now in Sydney] on October 6th off South Ballony wii'h 28 tons of black oil, taken this season onboard. The whaler Onward of Sydney was seen the same day with ten tons on board. The master of the latter reported that on the 25th Sep. when off Chesterfield Reef, three men deserted in one of the boats which on the 30th was picked up smashed on the reef. It was supposed that the runaways had been drowned.

The steamer Claude Hamilton from New Zealand arrived at Melbourne on the 20th.

The following men-of-war were lying at Sydney on the 20th instant :—Pearl 17, Rosario 3, Blanche 3. Dido 8. Gunboats Alacrity, Conflict, Renard, Sandfly, and Beagle.

The s.s. Rangatira is to take the place of the Egmont in the New Caledonia trade.

The ship Maid of Judab, once well known in these waters, left Hong Kong for Sydney on the Biu September last.

The s.s Victoria arrived at Cleveland Bay from Sydney on the 14th inst.

The barque Glimpse sailed from Newcastle for Dunedin on the 17th inst.

The brig Beu Nevis, Captain Clough, sailed for Auckland from Newcastle on the 17th inst, with 399 tons coal.
