GODDARD CONCERTS.-RUSH FOR TICKETS.
ENCOURAGING NEWS FROM THE
SHOToVER,
THE TIMES ON IMMIGRATION.
CHILDREN ROBBED IN THE STREETS
DUNEDIN,
(From our own Correspondent.) This day.
Good accounts have come from the Upper Shotover and Arrow. Square's party realized £30 per man per week, with every prospect of continuing. On Friday last was obtained 16 ounces for four days work by three men ; three weeks ago a share was offered for fifty pounds and refused. The Albion Brewery, which takes over the distillery premises, is likely to be a success ; half of the shares are already taken. The Ocean Beach railway is floated, and will commence operations at once, so as to connect Forbury by rail in time for the next meeting. The Goddard Company is in full swing, and seats for the second concert are rushed and taken, before the plan is open for inspection. The tickets for to-night are at a premium. The Times this morning strongly condemns the increase of pauperage in Dunedin, and urges more liberal support to the Benevolent Society, and at the same time hints at the possible contingency of poor rates. It attributes this state of things to indiscriminate immigration. The Times passes a severe stricture on the apathy of the Government in not despatching the Luna to search for the missing schooners Cambria and Kaituna. The members of the Dunedin Fire Brigade threaten to disorganize unless the City Council consent to supply refreshments to the Brigade dnring the fires. Cases of robbing children in daylight at Dunedin are becoming frequent. Arrived—Somerville, brig, from Mauritius Sailed—Jessie Henderson, for Auckland.
