THE PLAGUE IN THE EAST.
A dispatch to the f-.tate Department from the United States Consul at Milta,-: incloses au article from tbe Malta T'.ma., otAugust 22nd, concerning the spread oJtiepliJiiem the regency of the Tripoli, and its appearance near Mecca, and added a Garment notice forbidding the lauding of pasengen, animals, and susceptible goods cominjftom tbe regency of Tripoli, and from tbe Arabian Red Sea ports. The newspaper article says : " The plague,' which originally broke out at Merj, in the rt^eaey of Tiipoli, twenty-four hours from Benghasi, has now appeared ai; Berais, within ten hours of the latter port, owing, it ii supposed, to the want of proper precautions in maintaining the sanitary cordon, which ha 3 been established round Merj. We also learn that a disease of the plague eharicta has broken out at Doga, near Mecca, which will render it necessary to take preaautioffl in cases of ships airiving here from porteß the Red Sea."
