Three men have been arrested for stealing a quantity of gold and specimens from amine at Sebaston. —The Yacht Club season opeii3 on Saturday.—A parcel of 150 hogsheads of Hennessy's brandy sold as low as 83. Wheat, good to ordinary, 53 9d to 53 lOd. Maize has been sold by auction at 03 9._ d. A telegram from Calcutta states that cornsacks are gone up 2 rupees per 100 in consequence of an advance in jute.—The Moderator of the Presbyterian Assembly gave a lunch to-day. There were two hundred persons present. — There wero about 120 gentlemen present at the Speaker's dinner.—At the settling for the Victorian Turf Club race meeting £8352 was paid over as stakes to the several winners—Mr Wilson being the highest uiuner, taking £1495. Mr Chirnside was the next for £1140. Mr Tait carried off £1127 —Richard James was committed for trial for the jewel robbery at Mr Lyster's.—About thirty parents were summoned under the Education Act for neglecting to send their children to school, and were fined small penalties.—A composition of 14s in the £ has been accepted in the estate of Mes9rs Wilson Crosbie, half cash, and the remainder guaranteed at three mouths.—Wheat sold at 5i Sd to 6s. Further transactions have taken place in twist tobacco. The proposal to subscribe towards the cost of governing Fiji is likely to be refused by the Assembly.—The bank deposits show a falling off of a quarter of a million during the last Quarter, and three-quarters of a million during the last six months. Gold has decreased to the extent of half a million during the last six months, while the banks during the same period provided increased accommodation to the extent of nearly a million. — —A young sculptor is creating a sensation with plaster models of public characters. He has produced life-like caricatures of Judge Barry, Mr Coppin, and other notabilities.— Maize is quoted at £5 lid ; oats at 5s Gd.— The convict Weechurch, in Pentridge stockade, this morning inflicted a serious injury on a warder named James Cogblan. He attacked him with a garden-hoe, it is said, with intention to murder. The injuries are, however, not considered dangerous.— In the running for the Melbourne Cup, at the start Arrow, Protos, Fitz-Yattendon, Kettledrum, and Haricot were first away, then Kettledrum and Arrow led past the stand, followed by Goldaborough and Lapidist. At the river turn Lurline and Haricot took up the runuing, and led past the Abattoirs, with Goldsborough, King Tom, and Arrow following. Haricot then led into the straight, and won easily by four 1 ngths, Protos coming in with a rush for second, The Diver taking third place, and then came King of the Ring, Fitz-Yattendon, and Goldsbrough together; After Dark, Dagworth, and Lapidist in the rear. Haricot's easy victory for the Cup will prove advantageous to the Ring, although the winner was backed largely, but not to the extent of other horses. Time, 3 minutes 37 seconds.— The following horses started :—Haricot (1), Prots (2), The Diver (3), Dagworth. Lurhne, King of the Ring, Goldsborough, Arrow, Lapadist, Fitz - Yattendon, After Dark. Speculation, Goshawk, King Tom, Gloom, Break of Day, Kettledrum, and Cleolite.
