The consequence was that operations were suddenly brought to a standstill, and the whole of the men and boys, numbering upwards of 2000, were imprisoned in the pit tor many hours. An apparatus was at length rigged up, and the miners were slowly and safely wound out of the pit by means of an unused shaft situate at a distance from the one in which the accident occurred
