The s.s. Southern Cross, Captain Sellars, arrived here from Auckland at half-past four yesterday afternoon. The ship Loch Awe is only waiting for a fair wind to take her departure for San
Francisco.
The unloading of the ship Queen of Nations was very quickly effected up to the time that her railway iron was commenced upon. This weighty part of the cargo has with this fine ship, as ■well as with the Loch Awe and other vessels, been a source of great delay. We hear that the Queen of Nations has not been able to put out anything since Thursday morning lowing to the tardiness of the Government officials in providing the means of carting the iron away. Captain Ellis, the Harbour Master, will not allow more than a certain weight of rails to lie upon the wharf, so there is nothing for it but for the ship to remain idle till the discharged cargo has been removed. Under these circumstances, and having regard to the fact that time is very valuable to a captain in port, we think the Government should wake up and provide more efficient,; cartage.
