RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Te Papa, Wednesday, Mat 1. Before H. T. Clark, Esq., R.M., and Major Roberts, J.P. A settler at Te Puna ; named Sweeney, was charged with carrying a loaded revolver after dark. Hie stated that he held a magistrate's permission to carry arms, and that his farm being a lonely one, reiaote from any European neighbours, he had brought the pistol to leave in charge of a friend in Te Papa. The charge was dismissed, but th 6 weapon was ordered to be detained by.the police.
Stealing Tents.—J. Maguire and William Jones were charged that they were suspected of stealing two tents, valued at £3, the property of Mr. R. C. Jordon. They had been employed to work for the prosecutor, who supplied them with tools, rations, money in advance, and the two tents. After working a few days, they had left the place, taking away the tents, one of which was found in the possession of a person in Maketu, who bought it from one of them for 15s.—The case was remanded till Saturday for the production of this person.
McQ-oveen T. McQ-owak.—Claim for £16 10a 6d.—Adjourned to May 15. Ryan v. Jobdan. —Claim for £40 0s 6d. —There was a set off of £11 14s 3d, and £26 paid into Court. The balance was the cause of action, defendant pleading a written acknowledgment that the account was closed, including the balance claimed, and defendant alleging that he had misunderstood the meaning of the acknowledgment when he signed it.—Adjourned to May 15. Kelly v. Habbison.—Claim for £35 3s. Amount of an order given by Captain Skeet to Mr. Buddie, on behalf of J. Q-. Harrison & Co., which order plaintiff had cashed, and ■which was dishonoured on presentation. Defendant, Mr. J. H. Harrison, called the attention of the Court to the circumstance that the order was not endorsed, and stated that he was not a partner of J. Gh Harrison & Co. when the order was given.—Nonsuit.
