"THE GRAND DUCHESS."
Wb would draw attention to the announcement from Mr. B. N. Jones that Offenbach's ever pleasing comic extravaganza "La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein" will be produced at the Prince of Wales Theatre this evening. The heroine will of course be sustained by Madame Simonsen, and we prophecy a treat to all who honour the theatre with their presence to hear this popular opera. Great care has been devoted to the production of " The Grand Duchess," and in addition to the ordinary company a number of amateurs will appear." The drama illustrates the whims j>nd fancies of a high born lady, who in the end makes up her mind that as she cannot have what she likes she must like what she has. The play is believed to be a satire upon Isabella, ex-Queen of Spain, who while occupying the throne was conspicuous for her passion for those much beneath her in rank. Mr. Simonsen will conduct the orchestra, which has also been strengthened.
