THE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual weekly meeting of the Borough Council was held this afternoon, at two o'clock, in the Council Chambers, Canada Buildings. There were present his Worship the Mayor, P. A. Philips, Esq., Councillors Tonka, Asher, Macready, Smart, George, Atkin, Hampton, Staines.—The minutes of preceding meeting were read and confirmed. — Air. George presented a petition from 1(5 rate-payers in Drake-street, south side, praying for oertain improvements to be made ill the pathway. Petition read and received.— Mr. Lusk presented a petition from certain ratepayers of Upper Beresford-street, relative to the drainage in front of their properties. Petition read and received.—A letter from certain ratepayers in William-street was read, requesting that a fnvr loads of scoria ash be laid down in that street. Ordered to be considered next siltins-day.—A letter from the Mount Albert Highway Trustees was read, calling the attention of the Board to the state of ihe road neur the Mount Eden toll gate. The letter was ordered to lie on the table.

Cm Ekdowitents.—The report of the committee appointed to wait on his Honor the Superintendent respecting the city endowments, was then real. The report stated that his Honor hud expressed hit readiness to supply the Council with a list of the properties, and of the various rentals arising therefrom, the amount of arrears due, and also, a list of the properties unlet at present. H« as.) expressed bis willingness to allow the Council to ucfc as his agents to collect the rents nn.'l arrears, and to let the allotments, at present not let, on condition of their paying into the treasury all the above sufficient to meet the interest, and sinking fund payable thereon, the balance to go to the Borough fund. • The amount of interest and sinking fund payable yearly is about £1500, and the debentures have about nine years to run. The committee believe that if these properties were carefully administered a good balance would accrue to the credit of the Borough. Ordered to lie on the table.— The report of the Inspector of Works was read. The contractor had not complied with his instructions in repairing the Mount Eden Road. The labour portions of the works in town are weeks in advance of the carting, but the "contractor had promised to put on more carts during the present week. The report complained of the state in which the Gus Company had left a trench on Grafton Road. The progress of all works iv the city had been greatly retarded on account of the weather and the absence of carts.

Committees. —On the motion of Mr. Smart, it was ordered that Councillors Macready, Asher, Atkins, Q-eorge, and the mover, be a committee to draw up rules and regulations relative to hawkers' licenses.—On the motion of Mr. Smart, a Finance Corn-' mittee was formed, consisting of Councillors Smart, Tonks, Staines, and Hnmpton.—A. Street Committee was formed, consisting of Councillors Macrendy, Atkin, Q-eorge, and Bugden; and a Lighting Committee was formed, consisting of Councillors Asher, Tonks, and Smart.—Councillor George moved, " That a pitched crossing be laid at the junction of Nelson aad Druke-street, north side, and that the footpath be laid with scoria-ash from Chapel-street, same side, where necessary." Carried.—Conncillor Q-eorge moved, " That kerbing be laid at the corner of Hobson-street and Victoria-street, near the lamp-post." Carried. (Left sitting.)
