Railway Timetable.—ln this issue the Railway Department advertises particulars of special Akaroa-Christ-church excursion fares and special train arrangements for the Christchurch A. & P. Show and Races, 4th to 11th November. This is of special interest to Akaroa people.
Changeable Weather. —The spring of 1939 has been a very variable one and the slow growth in gardens and pastures is explained by the unusually low temperatures experienced. Yesterday was a typical mid-winter day v/ith a cold southerly wind and showers of sleety rain.
Petrol Tax Refunds.—The Banks Peninsula branch, N.Z. Farmers' Union, recently wrote to Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P. regarding the rebate of petrol tax on petrol used on farms. Mr McCombs replies that the Customs Amendment Act, passed in September, provides for the refund of additional tax on all petrol used on farms, by aircraft and by fishing boats, the refund being retrospective to August 1. Applications can be made to postmasters for refunds.
Old Duvauchelle Stablest—ln referring to the old coaching stables at Duvauchelle about a month ago we mentioned that they were burned down. They were not burned down when the late Mr R. Paton's house was burned, nor when the Akaroa County Council chamb'ers were burned. After the coaches finished the buildings, were bought by the late Mr Harry Piper who pulled theiii down and built the Peraki woolshed from the timber
' Peninsula Land., Sale.—Mr B. H. Tosswill of Holmes Bay recently sold his property, consisting of 1300 acres to Mr G. G. Aitken, sha'rebj-oker, of Christchurch. Mr Toswill has farmed this property for the last seventeen "year.s It was part of the original Holmes Estate and since Mr tosswill has had the property he has carried out many improvements especially in providing water for the dry area adjoining Little Pigeon Bay. Mr Tosswill will carry on the management of the property for the next twelve
months,
Akaroa Womens Institute.-—On Friday next, November 3, the Akaroa Womens' Institute is holding its usual garden party at Mr E. X. Le Lievre's grounds, Oinako, Akaroa, when competitions -will be held and the tennis court will be ready for play. The charges are Members 6d and a plate, Non-members Is
Peninsula Shows.—The unusually late season will affect the Peninsula shows as .flowers and vegetables are very backward. With the flowers the position is not quite so serious as where some flowers are not ready others which are usually past will be available foi shows. The vegetables are going to; be very scarce indeed.
