EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS
PUBLIC MEETING TO BE
CALLED
At Wednesday's meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council ;he chairman (Mr R. Bruce) brought down a report from the . specia l < ommittee consisting oi the Mayor, Councillors Petrie, Wheich and himself. He then read a report which detailed the work
to certain persons named. He moved the adoption of the report; seconded
oy Councilloi Petrie,
Councillor Shuttleworth complimented the committee upon its report. The .■> , t Wns adopted. The matter of holding a public meeting wdiscussed. Councillor Reid moved a public meeting be held and the members of special committees be invited by circular; by Councillor Petrie and .jrried. Couiicillux Snuttleworth askea what decision had been come to about evacuation and where they would be evacuated. A landing force seemed to him the only menace and would be safer in the hills than elsewhere. The chairman said that the meeting considered ic would not be wise to evacuate wunien and children from the city to the Peninsula. These precautions would be valuable in the event of an earthquake. He considered a public meeting was necessary to finalise the committees.
The motion to hold a public meeting was carried.
