SPEECHES AT SCHOOL. On Friday afternoon after the i games had been played on the Recreation Ground, the pupils of both schools assembled 1 at the High School building where a very delectable afternoon tea hacli ibeen prepared by the girls under the supervision of" their cooking instructress, Mrs Maher The Mayor, Mr Geo. Armstrong, , welcomed therm all to Akaroa and said they had not seen Akaroa at itsbest but he hoped 1 any short-comings in the weather would /be made up in hospitality. Akaroa was an historic place and there was much of interest of the early days' to be learned l about it. Peninsula, people had always been nctsd for their hospitality and he hoped they would: always be considered: so. iMr P. A. Mi'dkle, Headmaster of the Akaroa District Higth! School, also . welcomed the visitors and expressed the pleasure it was to them al# to have them.. He hoped the contests : would be 4ncourage'd the two. schools and l that they would make another visit later on. again-. iMr Couch ' replied: thanking- the speakers and Akatoa people l ; warmly for their hearty welcome. He said the games were a minor, consideration compared with the great benefit the pupils derived from mingling together at such gatherings. SOCIAL' IN 1 EVENING. On Friday evening St. Peter's Parish (Hall was crowded with the visitors and the pupils and parents of the local school and a most enjoyable time was spent in game, music and dancing. Miss Betty Eggelton rendered two vocal items which were much appreciated while Mr Couch entertained the company with two humorous items which caused much amusement. IMisse9 Nancy Robinson and Audrey Haley did the Minuet very gracefully. A] competition for guessing the largest number of fam-. ous people was won by Mr Couch and 1 another for guessing advertisements resulted in Miss Lewta and Miss Betty Eggleton being equal' guessing thirteen out of 'fifteen. Misses Betty Whelc-h, Winnie Innes and 1 Nancy Rob inson assisted with the dance music. J A successful evening concluded with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." The visitors left again on Saturday afternoon on their return trip and before departure expressed pleasure at the splendid treatment they had received and extended an invitation to the Akaroa -High School' pupils to pay them' a return visit next year.
