AUTUMN SHOW.

The Peninsula Horticultural S uiety held its Autumn Show in the Oddle i >ws' Hall, Akao*, yesterday, There was a ye y fair number of entries, especially of fl iwrrs. A good deal of frui l :, apples in particular, was exhibited, bub there wero not many veget , ables sliown, s~nn claseea not b i ig exhib , ited at all. The late rain has Lien very benFfic'.al in bringing on the flnvars, but some former exhibitors showed nothing ab all this year.

Mr Low again acted as judge, and the Society is fortunate in having suc'i a. bhor , oughly competent jadge of all clusaes. Mr McLenaghan julged the cikea, fone=, etc, in the sundries, an \ we are glad to cay that these claeses w< re well filled, some excellent cakes and pastry being exhibited. Scones exhibited by Miss Young thoroughly deserved the first prize. Mr P. Brown was successful with his piff pastry, which is certainly a credit to hie cooking powers. In the flowers, Mrs G. H. Hay lock won most prizes, her asters being especially fine. Mr Virtue's six roses were the only ones exhibited, but they would be very herd indeed to beat. Dr Hargreaves exhibited somecvotus dahlias which were among the finest blooms in the Bhow. Mre Buokland also exhibited some, very good flowers, her collection of 24 being especially good and meriting its first prize. In the fruit department the show of apples was a really excellent one. There were large entries for all classes. Mre Bruce showed some really good fruit, and Mr ffam mond's apples, for exhibition only, were really huge.

There were not many entries for the ladies sprays and buttonholea, but Mrs Weatenra'a sprays deserve special mention. In the children's class for buttonholes, Miss Mary

Peach won both first, and second pnzj*.. In the vegetable department Mrs (J. H , Haylook and Mre T. W. Narbey were much' ' the largest exhibitors. Mies J. Rutland exhibited firms huge pumpkins which could not f«I to catch the eye. There wta a Urge show of marrows, bub few cucumbers wer« entered. The collections of vegetables were very excellent indeed and much commended by the judge. In the evening a promenade conoerb was held at whioh Mr and Mre Reid gave selections on their gramaphone. Mr Kiddey a'so sang two songs very pleasingly— , ' Give U3 this day Our Daily Bread," and " Failing;' Miae Mitchell, with her usual good nature, gave some violin soles, airs from the " Bohemian Girl." After the concert the fruit, vegetables, etc, were put up to auction by Mr Robinson and fetched a good price, as exhibitors were very Renerous in giving towards the uZ' y bri " k blddin g was * he order of the day and much amusement was caused by the various purchases. Dr Hargreaves gave an exhibition of the Kontgen rays, which was well patronised during the evenfng and intpresting in the extreme. The fat lamb given by Mr Robt. Newton for the gue?Bing competition fell to Mr A. Punckell. of German Bay, and Miss byte, . both <f whom guessed the exaot weight-531hs. The suppsr room, which was under the management of several young ladies, wus an excellent innovation. Altogether the Show was a great success, and Mr Orbell, the secretary, members o! the Committee, and other helpers are much to bo congratulated on the success of their efforts.
