SOCIAL AT WAINUI.
A social evening was held in the schoolroom, at Wainui, on Friday evening last, for the purpose of extending a hearty public welcome to the Misses Reid on their return horas, offer eight years work in China. The seating capacity of the room was tried to the utmost, the local residents turning out en masse, and many Akaroa friends taking advantage of the beautiful night to enjoy a pleasant trip across the harbour in the good ship " Emu." The chair was taken by the Rev. Mr Patthon, who opened the proceedings by according a hearty welcome in the name of all to the Misses Reid, and he was followed at intervals by the Vicar, the Rev, W. W. fedgwick, and Mr W. McKay. The two guests of the evening, each addressed the assembly, which evinced the keenest interest in the graphic descriptions given by the mission aries of some of their experience! in China, especially during the Boxer rising in 1900 At half time refreshments were handed round and done ample justice to the delaoaoies provided, uhewing that the ladies of Wainui have lost none of their cunning in the art of cooking. During the evening an excellent musical programme was most creditably pone through, the items being aa follows :—
Piauoforte Overture, Mr Lancaster; M Welcome Song," Mr J. Hooker ; Duet, Miss Thnmae and Mr L. Butler; "The Pilgrim Fathers," Mr A. Buokland : Piano forte Duet, Miss L. CoUettanrl Miss Billine ; "The Gift," Miss Anderson; "0, Rest in the Lord," Mr L. Butler; "Treasures of the Deep," Mrs Mackay ; " The Holy City," Mr T. McDonald; "The Bridge," Mies Thomas; Pianoforte Duet, the Misses Hooker ; " Echo," Mr L. Butler ; " There, Little Girl don'b Cry," Miss Andersen ; " Ring out Wild Bells," Mr W. H. Buckland.
The several vocalists were ably accompanied by Miss Craig, Miss Thomas and Mr Lanoaeter.
A most successful and enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the ringing of the Doxology.
