AKAROA BOROUGH COUNCIL

m. A meeting of this Council was held on Wednesday evening. Present -His Worship the Mayor, titi-l Crs Munro, Leete, Armstrong, Chaprell, Checkle;, and Hen ning. MINUTES The minutes of the prior ordinary and speoial meetings were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE Outward correspondence was read and approved. Inward correspondence waa read-* From Treasury Haying they had paid £79 lis 2d to the credit of the Council for the Coronation celebration. From Colonial Secretary acknowledging the election of the Mayor. APPLICATIONS FOR LICENSES. Edmund Jones applied for a carter's li oense within the Borough and "five miles outside. L. J. Vangioni asked for a license to keep 400 gallons of petroleum. Mr Henning applied for a license for the Town Hall. Mr Leete considered something ought to be done to the hall, as it was in the chief thoroughfare of the town and its appearance was not at all creditable. Cr Henning said tbere was a difficulty in keeping the hall at all. Cr Munro moved—That all licenses be granted. Seconded by Cr Armstrong and carried. SALE 09 LAND. Mr G. H. Haylook wrote saying the Council some eight months ago had applied for that portion of Beach road which belonged to him. Dodds, agent for the N Z Accident Insurance Co., asking the Council to insure workmen employed in the new drainage scheme of ths Borough. His Worship the Mayor moved—That Mr Dodds' spplication be held over. Seconded by Cr Henning and carried. REPORT. Cr H■.'lining, in seconding the adoption of the estimates, asked if the flooring cf the wharves was i-c'nded in the proposed ex penditure. His Worship ihe Mayor said the Finauce Committee considered that £50 only could be devoted to the wharves. Cr Heuning said thut as the Council de rived B'< much revenue from the wharves, more money oucht to be devoted to improviui. them. Cr Henning suggested that some local perton experienced in the use of dynamite, be entrusted with the work, as the present season v;as bo free from wind. The matter was left over for future con ■ sideration. TREES ON RECREATION GROUND. Cr Mumo objected to the wooden pro' tectors placed round the trees on the Recreation Ground, as they interfered largely with the running course. Ho moved—lhat the matter of removing the trees on the Recreation Ground be referred to the Re* serve* Commitle**. Cr Checkley seconded tho motion. Cr Arms'rong said he agreed with the motion, '.'lie trees, if they grew, would be a nuisance loth ground and road. Cr Herning if £ idered that as long as the trees were planted, it was a pity to pull then up ruthlessly and he moved, as an iimendmeEt— That the matter be referred to the Reserves Committee with power to act. Seconded by Cr Chappell. Or Newton said that if the trees wero to be removed bsfore the day of the sports he would be absent. The amendment was then put, tha Mayor and Crs Leete, Henning, and Chappell voting for it, and Crs Newton, Checkley, Armstrong, and Munro against it. The Mayor gwe' his casting vote in favor of the amendment, which was therefore carried. _R: OTION OF BOOTH. A verbal app ioation for the erection of a confectioner's booth on the Recreation Ground op Empire Day was granted,

STRUM CROSSINGS. Cr Henning said the crossings should be swept in bad weather, as they became so dirty when they were neglected. DRAIN The Mayor said that Mr Mackay complained of the flooding of his drain, which raused him much inconvenience. Cr Checkley undertook to see the matter attended to. LIGHTING CONTRACT. The Mayor moved and Cr Armstrong seconded—Thab Crs Chappell and Leete be deputed to sign the lighting contraot. Cr Henning was entrusted to see that the lighting of the Borough was satisfactory BAD DRAIN. Cr Armstrong said he #ould like to draw attention to the bad drain near hia house. It had been very unwholesome for some time. Cr Checkley undertook to see that it was well flushed out, FENCE ROUND RESERVOIR. The Mayor moved the motion standing in his name— That steps be taken to erect a suitable iron fence round the reservoir. He did not think that the fence should be more than 6ft high, and corrugated iron would be very suitable. Cr Newton** suggeation that the iron bolts of the reservoir should be used for fixing on the fence, appearad to him a very good one. Cr Armstrong seconded the imti-n. Cr Checkley said he did not think a i iron fenoo was neceseary, if the object was s mplg to keep out children, dags, c.c, and not leav3s and other rubbish. The Mayor said he wai quite willing to leave the word " iron " out of the motion, and have only the word ''suitable." IMPROVED MAIL SERVICH Cr Leete moved the m.ion In his name —That this Council rejoir.mei.d the Post' mister' General to call three separate tenders for the conveyance of mails to Akaroa. (1) A daily oo teh from Barry's Bay to Little River and baok. (2) A daily launch service from Akaroa to Barry's Bay and back. (3) A daily buggy service from B-ury's Bay to Akaroa and back. He clid no 1", think much need be said on the Subject. He thought the matter ought to be considered now, as the tender for the mail was soon to be called aud this lasted for a term of three years. The Government would do more for the route If thrre wci3 a daily service tne way. There was to be v. meeting on Saturday, at Duva-chelle's to consider the question of improving the Barry's Bay wharf and form ing a flit road between Barry's Bay and Duvauchelle'B. Cr Newton --fun he had much pleamre in seconding the motion, as he considered the movement was a good and progressive one. Cr Henning asked if in the motion a daily train service was included. He had heaid that if tho Akarra only asked for it a daily train service to Little River could be ob tamed. Thr- Mayor considered the motion wa» a step in the right direction. r lhe motion was then put to the meeting and carried unanimously. NOTICE OF MOTION Cr Leete gave notion to move at a sprcl.il meeting to be held on 17th June a resolution I making the usual general rate of 15-16ths of a penny in the £ for year ending March 31st 190-1.
