AKAROA AND WAINUI ROAD BOARD.

A iii.eting of this Board was held on S_t urday ; present—Messrs J. X Newtrn (in the chair), Peitigtuw, Ne. begin, OheeLl.y, and Piper. MINUTES. The minutes of last meeting were lead and confirmed. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. Mr H. W. Piper, in movicg that Mr J. R Nevv'oi be ra elected as Chvirrnan, referred to tne many valuable services rendertd by that gin leman to the ratejayers. Mr Newbeg.u seconded, aud also p-id a tribute to the indubtry and ability of the Chairman. Messrs Checkley and Pettigrew expressed similar opinions. Mr Newton was unanimously elected, and suitably replied. DEPARTMENT OF ROADS. The District Road Engiueer wrote asking for schedule of amount required for r« ads, bridges, etc., in the district for which the Board wished provision to be made on the Roads Estimates 1903 4. The schedule w»uld be sent lo Wellington with the Engineer's estima'.es and recimmtnda'ions. Requests should be cj. fined to wui.a of great urg.ncy only. It was .esolved to make a r.que.t for £150 for the metalling of Long Bay ro.d. BELLS ROAD. Mr James B<own waited on the Board re Bell's road, which badly tequired repairing. There were 13 chains on the flat requ red metalling, and this would take about 100 yds of metal. There were 300 yds of li ling required, and the work, as a whole, would cose some whet c about, £40. There were some 62 chains of the road ou the hill requited considerable repair. He offered to rep.ir the 62 chains at Is 61 per chain. Mr JJ. W, Piper moved —Tnat Mr Brown's offer to repair the 62 chains at li 6_ per .chain, and find 300}ds of filing, at la per yard, b. accepted. Seconded by Mr Newbegin and carried. B»y Valley Koad have been repaired, one f..d metalled and footbridge erected, but having no cement was unable to poiut footbridge. Trie two ca-d.B of cement sent from Wuinui were no good, being sco in ihe cask, tie has repured Old F:ench Farm Road on Barry's Bay side. Stones have b.en carted to fill up place scoured cut on upper side of French Faun bridge, above the bridge there is a cor_er that requires cutting off to give c eek a straight course through the bridge. At present, the water pit.h.s on to top iid s of wing wall, and will in time work through the bridge. Before cutting is done, Mr Br. cherie's permission will have to be asked, as it is on his own land. \V ji. Wrigh.'s road has been ero.ned up from end to end, and one new culvert put in French Earm Valley Road and Stephen Hunt's Road have been attended to. He is now on Okaiu's Road, crowning up aud putting in the new culverts. There is a good lot of work on this road, an. he a.ks permission lo keep the extra hands fir a w.ek or two to ge. the heaviest work dDne. All the wor.t work has been done at Little Kiver a_d the extra hands kuocked off.

The Chairman moved the following notioa of motion standing in hi 3 name—That steps be taken to form ths Akaroa and Wainui R ad Board into a County. After bief discussion, it was resolved that th 9 Board go into Committee to consider the question of forming the Road Board into a separate County. : On re.-umirig, the Chairman reported that the following res jlution9 had been pa. (2) That in the event of the Board receiving a reply in tha affirmative, the Chairman, Messrs Piper and Checkley b. a Committee to take what steps they consider necessary. TEMDBRS. Ihe following tenders were received for breaking metal at Wainui: —Amos Arnold, 3s 9d per yard; T. Ls Comte, jr, and P. Shadbolt, 4s 6 . per yard. The tend i of Amoa Arnold was accepted. No tenders were received for tho Crown Island Road. ACCOUNTS. Aco.unts amounting to £140 were passed for payment and the Board adjourned to June 13th.
