Wellington, Sept. 2nd
The Premier has received the following cable from Colonel Porter, commanding the Seventh Contingent in the Orange-River Colony:—The Contingent in its opeiations during the three weeks from Bth August has boen constantly on the trek, and has made successful night marches and attacks. Boers killed 31, many wounded, prisoners 35, rifles 19, ammunition and goods waggons 21, carts 18, horses 3000,- mules 10, oxen 200, sheep 16,000, forage 50 tons. On 23rd August 10 Boers were attacked by us to recover a convoy. They were repulsed, the Contingent resisting gallantly ; close fighting. The men of the Contingent are well and cheerful.
In the case of Doyle v. the N.Z. Candle Co., in which the jury awarded plaintiff alternately £500 damages un-
der the Employers' Liability Act, or £600 under common law, -Mr Justice Edwards has sustained the finding of the jury and given the plaintiff time to decide which of the verdicts he will accept
It is stated that as the result of Saturday night's decision of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association some of the Auckland and the whole of the Dunedin and Christchurch clubs will secede from the Association.
The body of the seaman Niblick, one of the men drowned through the capsizing ef H.M.S. Archer's boat -was recovered yesterday. As Captain Rolleston had already held an enquiry and decided that the cause of death was accidental the coroner will not hold an inquest.

Mrs Ilursthouse, wife of Mr Eichard Hurst house, .Mayor of Motueka, died suddenly last evening. Mr Hursthouse was absent at Wellington at the time."
Sydney, Sept. 2nd
Under an agreement by which a large number of employers in the baking trade conceeded their employees a reduotion of hours and increased wages, the minimum price of the two-pound loaf has been fixed at 24d.

Lieut. R. S.. Coulter was killed, and Privates Ellis and Harvey were severely wounded near Vryheid All belonged to the Victorian mounted troops.
As a result of the Committee's recent report, recommending a drastic reduction of the capital, the shareholders in Allsopp and Son's brewery have decided to reduce the capital of the company by i? 143,000, writing off 800 per cent, of ordinary stock, and 50 per cent, of preference stock.
