ROMAN CATHOLIC BAZAAR AT AKAROA, EASTER, 1897.
(Contributed.)
.For some time pai-t, a number of the ladies of St. Patrick's congregation have been preparing for a bazaar, in order to raise funds to extinguish the debt en the Presbytery. The Bazaar was opened on Eesfcer Monday morning by Hia Worship the Mayor, of Akaros, (M r Freeman Petts), in the presence of a goodly namber of friends and well wishers. His Worship made some very praiee, worthy and appropriate remarks on the beautiful display and tasteful decorations, more especially on the work exhibited at the stall presided over by Mrs Scully and Miss O'Reilly. This he eaid, woald beer competition from any part of the colony, and was the work of the sisters of St. Joseph at Kerrytown, and reflected great credit en them. Indeed so beautiful was some of this work, notably a magnificently worked mantel drape of green plush, worked with pearl end gold beads that it excited the admiration of all who e*w it, and while it was raffling, the demand for tickets was very keen. There was also a beautiful handpainted mirror framed in plush, a mantel drape worked in plush, several tjushiouf, wall-pockets and other articlee also the ■work of the good sisters in other convents,, Altogether, this stall was without doubt the best, as is proved, by the tact that it realised more than the two others combined with the refreshment stall, besides there being some articles unsold sent to the Rev. Father Dunham for the nse of the Presbytery, or for a future Art Union. Stall No. 2, was preeided over by Mrs Narbey senr. 'and the Misses Narbey. There was a goodly display of plain and fancy needlework all the of the Mieees Narbey, who really deserve credit for the energetic way in which they went to work to finfeh their stall. No. 8 stall was nnder the supervision ot Mesdflmee Narbey, Cullen, F. Narbey juar. and B. F. .Lelievre. Here also was a variety of plain and fancy articles and the stall holders were most courteous and painstaking. The refreshment stall was in the bands of Mesdamee Narbey (2) and Mora. The Bazaar waa certaiuly a success, the sum of nearly £85 being realised, and this for Bnch a email place as Akaros, is altogether satisfactory. The Rev. Father Dunham and committee of ladies rfeeire to thank most heartily ■•he Misses Porter, and Messrs Helbert, Hay ward, W. and F. Millrr i and L. Grnham for their extreme kindness in s existing with the raffling. These ladies and gentlemen deserve great praise for the unselfish manner in which they devoted their time and energies io wards promoting the success of the Bazaar.
