The Akaroa Mail. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1897. BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY.

Councillor Orbkll's notice of motion given on Wednesday Inst at the Borough Council meeting will be read with interest by all burgesses, whatever their opinion on the feasibility of procuring a water supply. The subject has been considered several times before it is true, but there is a great deal more to be said about tbe matter, and there is no time when the urgency of the case appeals to one so much as daring a hot dry summer. When the subject was first considered, the estimate of Mr Wilkin's was so high that it killed the idea for a year or two. That indomitab'e warrior for all that he considers the public good—Mr WH. Henning—next took up the matter, and worked bard to prove to the Council the practicability of getting the work done for a sum within tbe reach of th? borough's finances. It was thought, however, that the coßt would be much greater when if came to the point ; and the whole matter dropped after a brief but very fiery campaign. . •

It is to be hoped that this time some means will be devised to procure a professional opinion tit a moderate rate. We do not believe that any enormous sum is needed, and are-alive to -the- fact that water supply means also the cheap electric lightingiof the town, regarding which we are inclined to think that recent scientific knowledge has rendered practical application possible at a very low cost. At any rate the re-discussion and re-consideration of the whole matter eaunot fail to be of profit to the community, and we hope that it will receive the very serious consideration it deserves.
