MINUTES,

Tbe minutes of the previous meeting were read and confi mcd.

Sunckell offered £1 for grass-seed on Long Bay-Road. Sunckeil's off>r to be accepted, provided money is pdd before next meeting. From Mr Eli Soott. asking for his name and bis soil's io be placed on roll for certain sections in Wainui.

Application printed. From Mr G. Giddens jun., offering to clenr plips on French Farm Road. Work to be let by tender. From Mr H. Piper as under : " Duvauobelle'd B«y July 21, 1896.

g* r> —ln receipt of.your memo stating the Board grant" me £4 (four pounds) to assist in repairing my road. Well. I cannot compliment tbe members on their generosity, it being only an eighth of one year's ratos. and barely 2 per cent, of moneys received since last expenditure. Re culvert pipes borrowed, »hey were 9-inch ones and it was an exigency when the Board required thorn. I'm not ceitain »p to number, but I think fouiteen, - I .only require seven for-one culvert v present. Ido not think I've been treat.-d we'l in tbis matter. I erooloyed men affc-r t'e big slip Upon the Okain'd Road, to dig out and clean something like 12 pipa° on roy flat, to save thair bwtDg broken.. —Yutir-i, &0... FTicsry Piper."

From Mr Tl. W- Piper ua under

Sir In reply to your request for more information re pipe* taken fro.n Duvau cbelle's Valley Road, and which wt now ask to be returned, I may -tat- the follow - ing me to tbe beet of my belief, thn facts of the case :— The Board granted two 9-inoh culverts of about 20ft each to replace two wooden culverts on the Duvauchelle's Bay Road. I am not sure of the exact length, but I dif-tinct'y remember tbe pipes being stacked on the side of tbe road for son.c time. The. Board running short of pipes some time after, borrowed ours, as the wood tbey were -intended to replace seemed likely to last longer. One of these culverts was filled in when the improvement was made six or eeveo years ago ; the other 1 now want to renew. I trud the above applanation will prove satisfactory and t>e Board will see its way to return at least one of the culverts. While reoognieing the right of the present Board (o something definite, I fail to one why I should bo called upon to prove my right to the consideration now asked for wken if tne ttourd in the past had not failed in their obligation there would have been no necessity for tbe request.—Yours, etc., H. W. Piper." ' Resolved that £1 be granted as tbe pipes were evidetuly pkced on the road to be

used on it

From Mrs Casil,*. asking to have her name placed on roll for pactions 10 and 11. block 571, Duvauchelle's, occupied by her by permission of Mr C. Dam pier Crossley. Applicst : on to stand over till next meeting-.

• Getlttemen,—Since your last meeting I have attended the Government Auditor, and hevethe hooourto lay before you'the balance-sheet for tbe year 1896 duly certified to by the Auditor- General. Tha roads have bad. much damage done to them by the recent bad weather, but have all been kept open for traffic; except the Terawera roads, where fords are in a very-

bad state, and require attention now tbe creeks are low. I advise that come of the roads on which the slips have only had enough laken off to allow of traffic, be let by tender to be put in order. I have had ihe Barry's Bay Valley bridge repaired as directed, and have careful y inspected at. and find that Mr Jas. Wright bis made a thorough good job of the -side wall that gave way. and the bridge is in first-class order. When the creek gets low I ihiuk it will be advisable to put a few loads of large i-tines at the foi't.of the wing wall to prevent scour. AH the rate notices have been posted, and rates are coming in. 1
