The Criminal sittings of the Supreme | Court opened this'morning before His Honor Mr Justice Denniston. There w«re sixteen persons for trial. His Honor, in his charge, said that tho only point celling for notice in the cailendar was the absence of crimes of violence agaiust the person. Cbatles Sutton pleaded guilty to two indictments for forgery, and was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. Michael Bennan, an old offender, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, and received fouryears. Henry Cashmere, a lad of 14, pleaded guilty to having set fire to Nt, Aloysiu's Hal], and as he had been six weeks in gaol, was ordered to be imprisoned till the rising of the Court. Hugh Millighan pleaded guilty to three indictments, charging him with having embezzled money ol the Christchurch Operative Bootmaker Society, and was sentenced to two years.

The Tick Confereacs recommended that the various Parliaments should introduce as early as possible a measure to provide for an improved system of branding stock. The loss in the value sf hides under the present system is £300.000 per annum. A cable was read at the Conference from Dr. Hunt, who was despatched on behalf ol Queensland to investigate the tick in America. He states that the tick is identical with Texas fever. The Bureau at Washington is doubtfulns to the benefits to be derived from dipping or inoculation. American experience shows that the losses among cattle born in infested districts are trivial
