GOUGH'S BAY.

The school here her.) lnd a narrow esoape from being burnt down on Wednesday night, June 29th. The lire was discovered by Mr Wilson, who happened to be pissing at the time, who, with the help of Mr G. Kearney, after some lime extin» guishdd it. It broke out in the woodwork of the chimney of the old schoolroom, and had doubtless been smouldering through the day till night came on, which was luckily very calm. The new schoolroom built recently is added to the old one, both forming a T shape building. The whole would doubtless have been in a heap of ashes before morning had the fire not been discovered. Fortunately Mr Kearnoy was on his way home from Akaroa when he heard the continued cooeing, and made for the direction from whence it oauie. Mr Wilson was thinking of clearing out the school stock and apparatus when answered by Mr Kearney, as he could make no one hea». The damage done was trifling. This school was examined on the 29th April. The following are the results of the examination for the seven months in which Mr Wilson has been teaching here :—Pass subjects : Standard 4—Presented 2, failed 1. passed 1 ; standard 3— Presented 2, passed 2 ; standard 2—Presented 2, passed 2 ; standard I—Presented 6. failed 2, passed 4 ; preparatory—Presented 5. Total presented 17, failed 3, passed 9. Percentage of passes 52 94, percentage of fniluree 25. The two pupils failure in the first standard was caused by Ibo pupils having no drawing books to present, the parents having refueed to provide them, not thinking tho matter of any importance, though aeked several times to do so. Were it not for this incident the percentage of posses wou'd have been 64.70. General remarks—The counting of standard 1 and of the preparatory division is weak, but with this exception the work of the classes up to and including the third standard is well done, as far as the pass subjects are concerned. One of the two pupils in standard 4 made a very fair puss in all the subjeots but one. Some improves rnents might be expected in the geography and grammar of standard 4. Composition and writing are good. Aa showing the miereßt taken by the parents and the children in the success of the school, I mny mention that all the pupils on the roll were present at the examination although lhe weather was very inclement.—L. B. Wood, luspeotor.
