[from our own correspondent] Lyttelton, Feb. 12.

The Port Victoria Racing Club Committee decided to hold the Races at the Head of the Bay, Lyttelton, on March 23rd. Eight events have been arranged for, including two trotting matches. The meeting promises to be a great success.

The boy recovered first, and except the fright did not suffer.

Inveroaroill, Feb. 12.

Mr Josiah 0. Jones, J.P., flour miller at Ophir, was accidently shot yesterday. In the morning he left his house with a double barrel gun and dogs to shoot rabbits in a paddock about a mile from his residence. The dogs returned without him and a search was made, and he was found lying dead alongside a fence with a gunshot wound in the temple, the gun was lying three feet away and one barrel discharged. Circumstances pointed to him being shot while crossing the fence. Wellington, Feb. 12.

A seaman named David Davis, belonging to the steamer Duke of Sutherland, was drowned off the railway wharf at midnight. Deceased and another seaman named Salve Arrowsmith were proceeding on board, but when the gangway was reached the former refused saying he was going op town for more drink. A struggle took place resulting in both men going overboard. The accident was observed and a life buoy was thrown, which was caught by Arrowsmith, but Davis could not be found, The body was recovered at two this morning. WooDTiLLB, Feb. 12. The heavy rain which set in last night has brought down a large slip on the Gorge line this, morning. It is stated that this slip will delay the opening of the line for a month. Brisbane, Feb. 12. Stormy weather has been experienced along the Northern coast, resulting in the wreck of two luggers in Torres Strait, and the drowning of five persons. London, Feb. 11.
