SUPPOSED LOSS OF THE KAKANUI.

The Hinemoa arrived from the Macquarrie Islands at 6.30 p.m. on the i'h inst. She reporis that the Kakanui arrived there on the 2nd of January, and left again on tbe 3<-d taking away eight men from the island, and leaving Mr Mellish, the Manager, and his wife there. Two days after leaving the Macquarries, a fearful westerly gale was experienced there, and it ia most probable that the Kak«nui foundered in that gale. The people on the island had plenty of rice, flour and biscuits, and also ate the Penguins' eggs and part of tbe birds themselves. Mr Mellish refused to come in the Kakanui, preferring to await the arrival of the Gratitude, ketch, from Invercargill. A thorough search has been made of the Auckland, Snares, Solanders, Traps, and all outlying islands, but no trace of anyone has been found. The gale experienced at the Macquarries after the Kakanui left wan so violent that casks ot oil were blown along the beach and a but was blown down. Captain Fairchild fears that it is oniy too likely that the Kakanui experienced thai gale and foundered, es when she left the Macquarries Bhe was very deep, and had apparently a good stock of coals on board.
